People depend on systems that continue to meet their promises. Regular security updates, clear status information and honest incident reports show that an operator accepts continuing responsibility.
Silence has the opposite effect. When changes arrive without explanation or known problems remain unresolved, users learn that the system’s novelty mattered more than their dependence on it.
Funding should follow the whole life cycle
Projects often receive resources for development and little for operation. This creates pressure to add visible features while ageing foundations receive attention only after failure.
Innovation budgets should include monitoring, support, repair and eventual retirement. The cost is not separate from the innovation. It is part of delivering the promised benefit safely over time.
Innovation needs maintenance because a new capability has value only while it remains usable and trustworthy. Caring for what works is not the opposite of progress. It is one of the ways progress becomes durable.
